UAE-Sudan: The bilateral ties between the two countries

 

The United Arab Emirates is one of Sudan’s most loyal allies in the region and is heavily invested in the stability and prosperity of the African nation. The two nations share a historic bond that has seen the two states sign multiple bilateral agreements, enhancing the collaboration between their leaders, citizens and institutions.

The relationship between UAE and Sudan has continued to grow and strengthen rapidly over the past decade, with both states making strong commitments to one another in the form of economic and political exchanges. In October 2017, the UAE participated for the first time in the London Conference on Sudan and hosted the Sudan Innovation Challenge, which showcased the engineering and technological capabilities of Sudanese innovators.

In addition to these initiatives, the UAE and Sudan have also taken joint steps towards strengthening economic collaboration. Both countries have worked together to establish a bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement which has helped to improve commercial relationships and encourages foreign direct investment from the UAE.

Sudan has established an FTA (Free Trade Agreement) with the GCC countries, of which UAE is a member, which helps improve the region’s economic opportunities. This FTA helps reduce the duty levels between the two countries and also helps to promote trade and investment cooperation.

The two states have also made progress in promoting cultural collaboration, increasing mutual understanding and cultural awareness. Various cultural centres have been established in the UAE to promote Sudanese culture and literature, while an Emirati Cultural Center was recently opened in Khartoum to promote Emirati culture in Sudan.

In terms of politics, the two countries have made significant efforts to foster collaboration, with Emirati political parties and leaders engaging with their Sudanese counterparts on a variety of issues. This dialogue has helped to foster a deeper understanding on both sides and to create a platform for mutual understanding.
